Our commitment

Astra Jewelers is a small studio at 250 Bellevue Ave, 2nd Floor, Montclair, NJ 07043. We treat access to our website the same way we treat access to the studio itself. If something on this site stops you getting an answer, booking a visit or asking about a repair, we want to hear about it and we will fix it.

Conformance status

We aim to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 Level AA. This site is currently partially conformant, which means most of the standard is met and some parts are not yet fully verified. We have said partially rather than fully on purpose, because we have not yet completed the manual testing described below and we would rather tell you where we are than overstate it.

What we have done

• A skip link so keyboard users can jump straight past the navigation.
• Text and background colours checked against the 4.5:1 contrast minimum across the site.
• Descriptive alternative text on images that carry meaning, and no alternative text on images that are purely decorative.
• A pause control on the background video, and motion reduced automatically when your device asks for that.
• Form fields with real labels, and form messages announced to screen readers.
• A navigation menu operable by keyboard, closing on Escape and returning focus where it came from.
• Visible focus outlines on links, buttons and form fields.

Known limitations

We would rather list these than leave you to discover them.

• We have not tested with a real screen reader yet. We have inspected what a screen reader would be told, by checking the accessibility information behind every page, and we fixed what that showed. Listening to an actual screen reader session, and testing with people who use one daily, is a different thing and we have not done it.
• Text over the background video. The video behind the headline on some pages changes frame by frame, so we cannot guarantee a fixed contrast ratio for text placed over it at every moment.
• The video pause button sits below the top of the page on the home page, so you may need to scroll or tab to reach it. If you have asked your device to reduce motion, the video does not play at all and you do not need the button.
• Third party content. The Instagram feed is supplied by an outside provider and we do not control its markup. Everything it shows is also available by contacting us directly.
• Documents and images from suppliers may not always carry full descriptions. Ask us and we will describe anything you need over the phone or by email.

We aim to reply within two business days, and we will give you the information you were looking for by phone or email in the meantime so you are not left waiting on a fix.

How we assessed this site

This site was reviewed by our web team using automated testing with axe-core against the WCAG 2.0 and 2.1 Level A and AA rule sets, together with manual checks of keyboard operation and tab order, colour contrast measured against resolved backgrounds, form labelling, heading and landmark structure, and the accessible name of every control and link. It has not been audited by an independent third party, and it has not been tested by people who use assistive technology.
