Wonderful people, great customer service, and an excellent turnaround time! They did a great job fixing my chain, and I really appreciate the quality of the work. Highly recommend!
Stephanie and Eddie were absolutely amazing! They were incredibly helpful, honest, communicative, and informative throughout the entire process. How the number
is worked out
Three things decide what a piece of gold is worth as metal. The karat, the weight and the price of gold on the day. Nothing else. Not what it cost, not who made it and not how old it is.
Karat is how much of the metal is actually gold. Pure gold is 24 karat. A 14K piece is 14 parts gold in 24 and an 18K piece is 18 parts in 24. The rest is other metal, alloyed in to make the gold hard enough to wear. The stamp inside a ring usually says which. We test it anyway, because stamps are sometimes wrong and occasionally dishonest. Our guide to gold stamps shows how to read the marks at home and our guide to 14K and 18K gold goes further into what the difference means.
Weight is measured in front of you on a certified scale. Gold is priced by the gram or the pennyweight. You see the reading for each piece rather than a total at the end.
The price of gold changes every day, so an offer made in March and an offer made in June on the same chain will differ. You are told the day's figure and how it was applied. What no buyer anywhere pays is the full market price, because the metal has to be refined before it is gold again and that work has a cost. Any offer is a share of what the refined gold is worth. The difference between buyers is how large that share is and whether they show you the arithmetic.
What people bring
Mostly the contents of a drawer. Bring all of it, including the pieces you assume are worth nothing. The test decides that, not the look of it.
- Gold jewelry you no longer wear. Chains, bracelets, rings and earrings in any karat. A piece does not need to be in fashion, in good condition or in a matching pair.
- Broken, bent or unmatched pieces. A chain with a snapped clasp, one earring whose partner is gone, a ring that was crushed or bent out of shape. The metal weighs what it weighs.
- Pieces that came from family. Often the hardest to decide about. Also the ones most worth looking at before anything is done to them. Some are worth a good deal more than their weight. You are told that before anything is agreed.
- Platinum as well as gold. Tested and weighed the same way, priced against its own market rather than gold's.
- Anything you are not sure about. Unstamped pieces, pieces that might be plated and pieces someone once told you were valuable. Bring them. The answer costs nothing and the piece goes home with you if it turns out to be nothing.
Common questions about selling gold
How much will I get for my gold?
It depends on three things. The karat, which is how much of the metal is gold. The weight, on a certified scale. And the market price of gold on the day, which moves. Nobody can put those together without the piece in front of them, which is why we do not give a number over the phone. Bring it in and you will see each step and hear the number explained.
Can you give me a rough idea over the phone or by email?
No. We would be wary of anyone who does. A price for gold nobody has weighed or tested is a guess. What we can do is explain how the number is worked out, so you know what to expect before you come in.
Do I have to sell once it has been valued?
No. Nothing is agreed until you say so and there is no charge for walking out with your gold.
Do I need to bring ID?
Yes. Bring a photo ID. It is recorded with the purchase, so having it with you saves a second trip.
What if the piece is broken?
That makes no difference to the gold. A chain with a snapped clasp, a single earring or a ring that was crushed all weigh what they weigh. Broken pieces are a large part of what people bring in.
What about gold plated or gold filled pieces?
They carry very little gold, so they are worth very little as metal. We test rather than guess, because the stamp is not always right and some plated pieces are stamped to look solid. If something turns out to be plated you are told so. It goes home with you.
