The 19-carat sun on Penelope Cruz's neck

She wore roughly 19 carats of heliodor on the Toronto red carpet, a gem most of the coverage could not even spell. Here is what it was, why it glowed and who made it.

What she actually wore

The necklace is called the Rekindle Necklace and it is by Zoya, the ultra-luxury house owned by India's Tata Group. At its center sits roughly 19 carats of golden heliodor. Yellow and pink sapphires run around it. The whole thing is built in an open-back setting, which matters more than it sounds. Zoya says the piece took more than 1,200 hours to make and describes the form as a reimagined eternity silhouette, the unbroken loop of stones usually seen on a wedding band, scaled up and set with color.

Cruz did not wear it alone. The look was a suite from the same forthcoming Zoya collection. The Wildflower Heart Ring paired a 13-carat amethyst, cut in the house's proprietary Bloom Cut, with pink sapphires and diamonds. The Iconic Lattice Bangle set brilliant diamonds in a gold lattice finished with emerald-cut tanzanites at the corners. The gown was Chanel, which is no surprise. Cruz has been a Chanel ambassador since 2018. She wore a different diamond necklace by the Italian house Garatti to collect her TIFF Tribute Award later in the same festival, so the Penelope Cruz TIFF necklace was really two necklaces on two nights. The heliodor is the one worth understanding.

Heliodor, the gift of the sun

Heliodor is the yellow to greenish-yellow member of the beryl family. If beryl sounds unfamiliar, its cousins will not. Emerald is beryl colored green by chromium, aquamarine is beryl colored blue by iron, morganite is the pink one. Heliodor is the golden one. The name is Greek for gift of the sun.

  • Its warm color comes from traces of iron inside the crystal.
  • It measures 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, hard enough for a ring or pendant worn often.
  • It is transparent and takes a bright polish. Unlike fine emerald it does not usually hide a fortune of internal fractures.
  • It sits well below fine emerald on price, so a big clean stone is reachable rather than fantasy money.

Here is the honest bit the press releases skipped. Heliodor is not rare the way a Kashmir sapphire or a natural alexandrite is rare. As a mineral it is reasonably available. What is uncommon is a large heliodor with genuinely good color and clarity. Rarer still is a jewelry house choosing to put one at the center of a red carpet piece instead of a diamond. The rarity here is not the material. It is the decision.

The design choices, decoded

The open back. A closed setting seals a metal cup behind the stone. An open-back setting leaves the underside exposed so light passes straight through the gem and bounces back to the eye. For a diamond it is optional. For a transparent colored stone like heliodor it is close to essential, because the color and the glow depend on light traveling through the whole stone rather than dying against metal. Building that into a necklace that also has to lie flat and comfortable is a fair chunk of why the house quotes 1,200 hours.

The color story. Zoya says the palette was drawn from India's spice traditions, with turmeric as the anchor for that gold. Take that as the designer's stated intention rather than a fact of nature, which is how any inspiration claim should be read. What is verifiable is on the stone. The central gold is warmed on one side by yellow sapphires and cooled on the other by pink ones, so the eye reads a gradient rather than one flat color.

The eternity form. An eternity band runs stones all the way around with no clasp in sight and no beginning or end. Blown up to a necklace, that becomes a continuous run of color around the throat, which is much harder to engineer, because every link has to flex and sit while hiding its own workings. The ring beside it leans on the same instinct, its amethyst cut in a proprietary pattern the house reportedly spent close to a year developing.

The house behind the necklace

Zoya is not a startup riding a viral hour. It is the top of the tree at Titan Company, the jewelry giant founded in 1984 as a joint venture between the Tata Group and a state industrial corporation. Titan built its mass reputation on the Tanishq brand, then moved into true luxury with Zoya, which opened in 2009 as a handcrafted, boutique-only house aimed at the modern Indian woman. For most of its life it has run from a handful of flagship stores and stayed deliberately narrow. That is what made the TIFF appearance read as a statement rather than a stunt. An Indian atelier put its own colored-stone language and its own proprietary cut on a global film star in Toronto and let the internet ask what heliodor was.

Why it is worth a second look

Step back and the necklace fits a pattern that has been building for a few seasons. Colored stones are pulling attention back from white diamonds on the red carpet. Provenance and story now do work a carat count used to do alone. And houses outside the old Paris and New York axis are increasingly the ones setting the conversation. The Rekindle Necklace lands in the middle of all three, which is why it traveled far past the fashion pages into gemstone explainers and jewelry forums.

None of that is reserved for a red carpet. The interesting stones sit just off the worn path. A golden citrine, a fancy yellow sapphire or a heliodor like the one Cruz wore is within reach of an ordinary budget. What it needs is a jeweler who designs around a stone rather than selling from a case. That is most of what a studio like Astra Jewelers in Montclair means by custom work. Pick the stone first. Set it so the light works for it. Then take the time. The carat count on a red carpet is not the point. The thinking behind it is. And good thinking travels.

Common questions

What is heliodor?

Heliodor is the golden, yellow to greenish-yellow variety of beryl, the same mineral family as emerald and aquamarine. Its warm color comes from traces of iron in the crystal. It measures 7.5 to 8 on the Mohs hardness scale, hard enough for everyday jewelry. Its name is Greek for gift of the sun.

What necklace did Penelope Cruz wear at TIFF 2026?

On the Toronto International Film Festival red carpet on 17 September 2026 she wore Zoya's Rekindle Necklace, a roughly 19-carat golden heliodor surrounded by yellow and pink sapphires in an open-back setting, part of the house's forthcoming spice-inspired high jewelry collection. She wore a separate diamond necklace by Garatti to collect her TIFF Tribute Award at the same festival.

Is heliodor expensive?

As gemstones go it is relatively accessible and sits well below fine emerald on price. A large heliodor with genuinely good color and clarity is less common, so a clean 19-carat stone is a real find rather than a routine one. Most of what made the Cruz necklace notable was the design decision to feature a golden beryl at all, not the raw cost of the material.

Who is Zoya?

Zoya is an ultra-luxury jewelry house from India's Tata Group, part of Titan Company, which was founded in 1984. Zoya opened in 2009 as a handcrafted, boutique-only maison aimed at the modern Indian woman, blending traditional Indian craft with contemporary design. It has stayed deliberately small, with a handful of flagship boutiques.

Can I have a piece made with a golden stone like this?

Yes. A jeweler who designs around a stone can build a ring or pendant around heliodor, golden citrine or a fancy yellow sapphire, most of which are far more affordable than a large diamond. That is what custom work is for. Astra Jewelers in Montclair does custom design and gemstone sourcing, so a piece can be built around an unusual stone rather than picked from a case.
